AEW Keeping Mental Wellness in Mind

Ron Hutchison • June 27, 2023

Dr. David Reiss, the good doctor and CAC lifetime member is in attendance at every AEW PPV event.

In the world of professional wrestling, behind the dazzling spectacle and awe-inspiring athleticism, lies a growing concern for the well-being of its performers. The recent All Elite Wrestling "Forbidden Door" pay per view event held in Toronto brought together some of the industry's finest talents from around the world, as well as a gentleman who should be no stranger to Cauliflower Alley Club reunion attendees, Dr. David Reiss!

Dr. Reiss is a lifetime member of the Cauliflower Alley Club and has presented several Learning Series seminars at our annual reunions throughout the years. I had the pleasure of reconnecting with Dr. Reiss, backstage at the PPV where he now serves on the All Elite Wrestling (AEW) medical staff and has an office set-up for talent at all AEW pay per view events.

Professional wrestling is a unique form of entertainment that demands exceptional physicality and mental resilience. The physical toll of the sport is well-known, but the psychological challenges faced by wrestlers are often overlooked. From the pressure to perform to the demands of maintaining a larger-than-life persona, the wrestling industry can place tremendous strain on its athletes' mental health.

Recognizing the need to address these issues, AEW has taken proactive measures to provide comprehensive support systems for wrestlers. Dr. Reiss, a renowned psychiatric consultant, has been at the forefront of these efforts, helping performers navigate the intricate landscape of their mental well-being in completely confidential sessions.

The presence of Dr. Reiss at the AEW PPV events reflects a growing awareness within the wrestling industry about the importance of mental health and the need for specialized support. His involvement as a psychiatric consultant demonstrates a commitment to prioritizing the well-being of wrestlers and addressing their unique mental health challenges.

As the wrestling community continues to evolve, the contributions of professionals like Dr. Reiss will be instrumental in shaping the future of the sport. By emphasizing mental wellness and fostering an environment of care and support, organizations like AEW are setting a positive example for other promotions to follow.

Moving forward, it is crucial for the wrestling industry to continue investing in mental health resources and research. This includes raising awareness about the potential long-term consequences of head injuries, implementing appropriate protocols for managing concussions, and ensuring access to mental health services for all wrestlers.

I was so thrilled to see David again after several years and am glad to report that he is looking well and is still as compassionate and caring as ever! Although, with the AEW schedule, he is not certain if he will be able to be at our August reunion, he wanted to pass along his regards to all of our members together with a reminder that mental health matters and that the good Dr. will always be available for anyone in the industry who feels that they might need his services at any time.

God bless you Dr. and thank you for the good work that you continue to do.  Kudos to AEW too, for bringing you on. They've certainly brought in the best and I urge all performers to reach out to the Dr. when in need.
